Diego Ochoa Laverde\u2019s dedication to observing, cataloging, and discovering\u00a0the status of bird populations shows\u00a0how birdwatching can be a powerful\u00a0tool to raise awareness, promote\u00a0conservation, and improve habitats.\u00a0Ochoa Laverde worked as director of external\u00a0affairs for the Humboldt Institute in Colombia and not\u00a0once but twice chaired the Bogota Ornithological\u00a0Association. How has avitourism contributed to\u00a0the knowledge and conservation of\u00a0birds in Colombia?<\/strong>
\u201cIt has allowed the discovery that Colombia is a megadiverse\u00a0country\u201d OR It has revealed that Colombia is a\u00a0megadiverse country. I don\u2019t think any Colombian,\u00a0including myself, fully grasps what it means to be\u00a0megadiverse because when you\u2019re born and grow up\u00a0here it all seems normal. It seems normal for us to look\u00a0out the window and see 30 different bird species. That\u2019s\u00a0not common anywhere else in the world. We live in an\u00a0avian paradise, and the wealth of bird species encourages\u00a0discovery. But without cataloging, classifying, and\u00a0studying them, these wonders remain unknown.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

How does the variety of thermal floors affect bird diversity?<\/strong>
That\u2019s the key. Colombia doesn\u2019t just have one Andean\u00a0mountain range; it has three. Humboldt[ \u2026 ] tried to find\u00a0out if there was a direct relationship between altitude\u00a0and the distribution of plants. He climbed Chimborazo,\u00a0then he discovered two important variables in the\u00a0distribution of life on earth: temperature and altitude.
Colombia has three mountain ranges, ranging from\u00a0sea level to snow-capped peaks, inter-Andean valleys\u00a0(the Cauca Valley and the Magdalena Valley), and the\u00a0Caribbean floodplain. There is water everywhere and\u00a0the Choc6 region is one of the most biodiverse areas\u00a0on the planet. We are in the tropics and we have two\u00a0oceans. In other words, there are a huge variety of\u00a0characteristics that make this country unique.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

How does avitourism differ from birdwatching?<\/strong>
Birdwatchers are one thing and avitourism is another.\u00a0[ \u2026 ] If you look at the Bogota Ornithological Association,\u00a0I can assure you that a very small percentage have a\u00a0background in natural sciences or are biologists. They\u00a0are doctors, dentists, architects, and psychiatrists. In\u00a0other words, they are people with an interest in birdwatching.\u00a0There aren\u2019t any expert birdwatchers here,\u00a0what we really need to create here is curiosity. I think\u00a0that if people are more curious about birds, They will\u00a0begin the connection they have with nature. If that\u00a0connection can be sustained, then people begin to\u00a0acquire more knowledge. And they can use that\u00a0knowledge for their own benefit.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

How can avitourism be done responsibly?<\/strong>
We need people to be more curious so that this\u00a0curiosity can drive a desire for conservation. [. .. ]\u00a0Avitourism is, fundamentally, an economic activity driven\u00a0by people\u2019s passion for birdwatching. It provides\u00a0many people who live in rural areas with a valuable\u00a0source of income for their work. Avitourism can yield\u00a0very rich information, but its primary goal is not to\u00a0create conservation initiatives.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
